Pisa is cited in the tenth book of Eneide. Around the 7th century B.C. there was already a settlement on the coast where currently there is Marina di Pisa. In the 6th century B.C., in the same period when Volterra was being founded, Pisa entered the dominance of the Etruscans. Afterwards, Pisa became a part of the Roman Empire. In the early medieval ages, Pisa became an important centre in the Mediterranean, thanks to the grandeur of its naval fleet. The Pisan boats used to defend the city from the enemy attacks and the maritime commerce quickly helped flourish the city economically. Starting from 1098 the Pisans took part in the crusades.
In 1509, Pisa was conquested by the Florentines then governed by the Medicis.
After the death of the Grand Gian Castone, the last of the Medicis who died without an heir in 1737, the government of Tuscany was entrusted to the Duke Francesco I of the Lorenas, who is succeeded by Pietro Leopoldo I, Ferdinando II, Ferdinando III and finally Leopoldo II. After the brief Napoleonic era, in 1815, the congress of Wien entrusted to the Lorenas the government of the united Tuscany which would be part of the Kingdom of Italy in 1861.
