History of City: The
origin of Viareggio goes back to when the Luccans and the Genoans,
allied against Pisa built a castle (Castrum de via Regia) to defend
the coast where today the city lies.
In the 15th century Lucca lost part of its power in the control
of the coast and Viareggio became the only opening to the city
of the state of Lucca.
In 1534, to be able to protect the coastal expanse another fortress
was erected, namely Torre Matilde, around which started the first
urbanisation settlements.
The development of Viareggio was however slowed down by the presence
of the neighbouring vast area of swamp. In 1741 the land reclaim
work terminated and from this moment on malaria started to diminish
progressively, finally disappearing completely.
Already during 19th century an economy based on seaside tourism
developed in Viareggio.
